Does Pallet Racking Need To Be Secured to the Floor? BSE UK
Should My Pallet Racking Be Secured to the Floor?
Should My Pallet Racking Be Secured to the Floor?
It’s a question we often get asked, and we are shouting from the top of our storage system to let the world in on the answer.
The rules and regulations for floor fixing of pallet racking are given in the SEMA Code of Practice for the use of static pallet racking and should certainly be adhered to.
Base Plate Inspection and Floor Fixing
Storage systems which are subject to the loading or unloading by mechanical handling equipment should be fixed to the floor slab with at least a single fixing bolt.
Pallet racking should not be fixed before the racks are aligned and levelled. And it is important that the racks are fixed to the floor in accordance with the instructions specified by the rack designer. Said instructions will be specific to each installation and will generally take into account the following:
- The rack application and use
- The rack’s height to width ratio
- The style of the baseplate in use
- The number of fixings required by each baseplate.
It is important to remember that the type of fixing is also key and will be specified by the supplier and should never be substituted with non-approved alternatives.
Please note that perimeter fixing, allowing the internal rear uprights to be left unbolted was an option under previous SEMA codes.
Get in Touch with the Team
One of the most important measures brought in by SEMA is the Storage Equipment Installers Registration Scheme (SEIRS). The SEIRS initiative is an industry specific training scheme designed to ensure installation teams work in line with SEMA guidelines and codes of practice.
It is highly recommended that any installation, relocation or removal of storage equipment is carried out by a SEIRS qualified installer; and at BSE UK the whole team is SEIRS registered.
