It is important to consider the following guidelines before installing your pallet racking system:
Who is erecting the racking?
The erection of pallet racking is a skilled job and should only be carried out by experienced and knowledgeable installation teams. It is not advisable that pallet racking is erected or moved by any individual without the necessary level of experience. The layout should never be altered without consulting your racking supplier.
Health and Safety
It is always advisable that a method statement and risk assessment is carried out prior to any pallet racking installation project. It is likely that you racking installation will fall within the Construction Design and Management 2007 Regulations and it is important to adhere to this.
Floor Slab
It is recommended that you obtain independent verification that your floor is of suitable construction to erect pallet racking and capable of sustaining the weight of the fully loaded racking. You must also ensure that the floor is suitable to securely floor fix the racking system in line with the manufacturer’s requirements.
Plant and Equipment
When installing your pallet racking system you should give consideration to the safe use of any plant or equipment (forklift trucks, scissor lift trucks). This is specified by ‘The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998’, and should only be operated by a suitably qualified individual. Any operation should be carried out in line with the appropriate manual handling regulations.
External Use of Racking
Pallet racking should only be erected outside if the design has been fully approved by your racking systems supplier.
Assembly of Racking
Please ensure your racking is assembled in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. All racks should be levelled to the appropriate SEMA/FEM design code and the uprights floor fixed as specified by the manufacturer.
Frames - A frame is constructed from uprights, brace components and base plates. It is important that these frames are assembled according to the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific size and height of the frames. The duty of each upright supplied will have been specified by your racking supplier in order to meet your requirements. The upright may be in more than one section (depending on how high your racking goes) – in which case a joining splice will be supplied. Adjacent frames in double racks should be connected by row spacers that add stability to the structure.
Fixings must be used to secure the racking to the floor. The type of fixings, base plates and number of fixings per base plate will should all be specified by you pallet racking suppliers.
For uneven floors and to ensure the racks can be erected to the appropriate SEMA/FEM installation tolerances, levelling plates should be located under the base plates. If a stack of levelling plates exceed 40mm the levelling plate should be located under the base plates. If a stack of levelling plates exceed 40mm the levelling plate should be tack welded together, however the overall stack of the levelling plates should not be greater than the vertical adjustment of the upright.
Beams – All racking beams should be inserted between the uprights of two frames and positioned at the height specified by the racking design provided by your supplier. No changes should be made to the positioning without consulting your local racking experts. To attach the beams to the frames they should be located into the slotted holes punched into the front face of the upright. This position should then be securely retained in position by inserting the beam safety locks provided. These locks are designed to prevent the beam from being accidentally dislodged. The locks are designed to fail should an upward force endanger the overall stability of the rack.
Load Notices
These should be supplied upon completion of the racking installation by your racking supplier, and fitted to the racking at regular intervals, in prominent positions where they are clearly visible to all operators.
When using the racking please refer to the appropriate code of practice for the use of pallet racking.
No alterations or adjustments should be made without first contacting your supplier.
If in any doubt, always contact your racking supplier!
